Yes, this film is considered by most to be a true classic, and one of the true gems of the "film noir" era. All in all, it's a fairly good detective flick, even by modern day standards. The plot will keep you guessing right up until the end.
I love a film that has a bittersweet ending as well. Sappy film endings can be so melodramatic it's sickening. :).
