Review of The Maltese Falcon (1941) by Kevin J — 30 Jun 2016
A classic through and through, The Maltese Falcon is mysterious, thrilling, and thoroughly engaging. Humphrey Bogart is typically brilliant in the lead role as the private detective hired for the case.
Mary Astor and Peter Lorre match his brilliance with great turns in supporting roles. From beginning to end, it is not hard to see how The Maltese Falcon has become a classic of cinema over the years and even if I prefer another Bogart picture, Casablanca, to this one.
That said, this is marvelously crafted and shows all the classic trademarks of film noir and exemplifies them to a tee. There really exists no better example of what the genre is than The Maltese Falcon.
