Review of The Maltese Falcon (1941) by Mark F — 21 Dec 2017
Some films are perfect. Case in point, The Maltese Falcon, which is probably why a remake of this classic has never been attempted (and probably shouldn't ever be). John Huston admittedly considered Hammett's book a perfect screenplay and that dedication to excellent source material is evident.
As stiff as stilted as the acting in many early films can be, the characters in The Maltese Falcon (with only a couple minor exceptions from bit players) seem like real people. Getting close to 80 years from its release Bogart and Astor, supported by Lorre and Greenstreet, continue to thrill.
