Quite good old school detective mystery drama. Humphrey Bogart is a San Francisco private eye. Mary Astor hire him to find a man who can lead to her sister unknown whereabouts. Humphrey partner Jerome Cowan takes her case and is shot dead mysteriously.
Mary also gone missing after that. The person which Mary want them to find is also dead. Peter Lorre visit Humphrey and want him to help find this prize treasure falcon. Mary returns and Humphrey keep her presence a secret from the cops.
She get nervous when Humphrey mention about Peter and she want to meet him. They talk and mentioned of a fat man. Sydney Greenstreet is the fat man and he also want to make a deal with Humphrey to find the falcon.
Although up to this point he don't know where and what is it. Sydney track it for 17 years and finally send 3 agents to steal it from a Russian general. But one of the man know of its value and decide to keep it.
Humphrey was drug unconscious. Back at his office, a boat captain came with the falcon and dies. Humphrey decide to set up the meeting. He manage to convince Sydney to make his young henchman Elisha Cook Jr who has been tailing him around, the fall guy for the murders.
When Humphrey send for the falcon, it turns out a fake product. Sydney and Peter decide to continue the hunt for the falcon and want back the payment made to Humphrey. Meanwhile Elisha escaped. Humphrey call the cops to catch the duo and further interrogate Mary true purpose.
Turns out on that fateful night, the dead agent remain loyal to Mary even after Sydney tries to reason him. Elisha then shot him dead. Mary seduce the captain to keep the falcon and deliver to Humphrey.
For Mary's part, she want to get the dead agent out of the story to get the falcon for herself. Jerome is needed to scare him but he didn't appear, so she kill Jerome and pin the crime on the dead agent.
But he too is dead, she know Sydney is in town and return to Humphrey for protection. The cops came and he hand Mary over as killer of Jerome.
