Review of The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) by Craig M — 16 May 2008
Despite the shameful butchering by editor Robert Wise on behalf of RKO, this film is still a masterpiece. Part of this tragedy is that viewers aware of RKOs interference in the film are rarely able to divorce themselves from this knowledge as they watch the film, which inevitably undermines the experience.
The Magnificent Ambersons can never be seen too many times, as the film generously keeps on revealing new layers. Check out V.F. Perkins' (BFI Publications) extraordinary critical account to appreciate how incredibly busy and intricate the film is.
