Review of The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) by Nathan F — 24 Jul 2008
Orson Welles, one would hardly argue otherwise, knows how to make a film--movie studios, however, do not. Legendary not only as a 'classic' film but as an opus eviscerated by Hollywood bigwigs unsatisfied with Welles' original ending.
And, sure enough, the first half unfolds elegantly; but, nearing the end, the narrative appears to fast-forward, like a DVD skipping large tracts of chronology. Of course, not Welles' fault, but I'm not one of those who can judge a faithful extrapolation--what could it have been? Oh, sad words indeed.
