Review of The Magician (1958) by Mark S — 23 Feb 2012
Having never heard of this film before, I wasn't really expecting it to be amongst Bergman's best, but I ended up finding it utterly fascinating. It is at times funny, philosophical and quite horrific.
By 1950s standards I'd say it contains a truly great piece of horror, I was surprised by just how powerful the scene was and didn't know what was going to come next. This is a clever film and a very knowing one from Bergman, he clearly saw something of himself in the magician's make-up.
