Review of The Magician (1958) by Tim S — 13 Oct 2013
Splendid, absurd, preposterous, mysterious, comic ghost story. A rationalist hopes to expose a traveling "mesmerist" -- and, incidentally, to seduce his wife. But the mesmerist is killed during one of his tricks.
The rational doctor performs an autopsy on the corpse, alone in an attic. But the door is locked. And the corpse may not be dead at all. Max von Sydow, Gunnar Bjornstrand, Ingrid Thulin, Naima Wifstrand and the rest of Bergman's stock company, all superb, Gorgeously photographed.
Each still could be a work of art.
