Review of The Magician (1958) by Cory L — 04 Dec 2011
The Magician is not a dense film, which is to say that it's not difficult or challenging for a black and white foreign film. There is not much enlightenment to gain in this picture other than the absurdity of truth.
The main point of the film is to cleverly lift the facade of our everyday appearances to reveal the rotten decay of what exists beneath the masks that we wear. The human soul is rotten to the core, but we are clever beasts, (magicians) who daily play the role of the actor, pretending to be something which we are inherently incapable of being.
The never ending play of human folly.
