Review of The Long Goodbye (1973) by Tony P — 08 Sep 2008
Gould totes the charisma necessary for a detective hero, and does so with notorious ease. His sauntering pace, gentleness, and wit just ignite the screen. Meanwhile, Altman's invisibility as a director assists in engaging the audience.
The camera holds a very human quality, keeping a continuous drift, behaving very much like a cautious observer. It's so simple, but absolutely breathtaking. The script is clouded by improvisation, but the plot is mostly intact.
The ending is... strange. Once Arnie shows up, things just get bizarre and stay that way until the end. Nonetheless, I was hooked from the opening shot. Also, the most incredible performance I've seen by Sterling Hayden.
