****.

Although it may not reach the heights of some of the films it has since inspired, 'The Long Goodbye' deserves major props for inspiring them in the first place. The influence of this film can be seen in loads of detective-noir dramas over the years; largely due to the endlessly watchable character of Detective Philip Marlowe, played to perfection by Elliott Gould. The script is funny, intriguing but most importantly entertaining. It takes its time, and manages to turn what could be a rather short movie into one filled with little nuances and tidbits to dissect. A downside of this is that the film sometimes feels like it isn't really going anywhere - but just when your mind starts to wonder it pulls you straight back in. A highly enjoyable, highly influential crime drama, with comedy sprinkled throughout.
