Review of The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965) by Josh W — 18 Dec 2008
Very good and extremely powerful, but definitely doesn't live up to the title. While it's very accurate to the Bible, the actors definitely don't do the characters justice. Max von Sydow was a lamp shade portraying Jesus.
Willem Dafoe was even better, which is surprising because von Sydow is a fine actor. Charlton Heston was good as John the Baptist as well as Martin Landau as Caiphus. John Wayne even makes a little cameo in this that's absolutely ridiculous and I felt was just kinda thrown in there for the sake of using The Duke.
Like I said though, the story is accurate and that's what makes this 3-1/2 hour movie watchable. It's also shot brilliantly in Israel. The crucifiction scene is very well done.
