Review of The Great Ziegfeld (1936) by Amani B — 08 Sep 2008
This musical is BIG with some over-the-top spectacles, perhaps most notably the never-ending spiral staircase number. A well-written movie with a wide array of characters. William Powell plays an endearing and charismatic Ziegfeld.
Luise Rainer portrays an unstable yet strangely likeable Anna Held. Usually I'm not into musical numbers that do not further the plot, but the sheer spectacle of the shots in this film won me over.
Also great to see Fannie Brice and Ray Bolger in action, playing themselves.
