Review of The Great Ziegfeld (1936) by Joel H — 25 Apr 2015
The Great Ziegfeld isn't all that great, actually. The film makes Flo Ziegfeld look like a fool and a swindler. And, if I may say so, it makes his career look like a folly. Additionally, the full-length musical numbers, while enjoyably extravagant, really add on to the final running time without adding anything to the plot.
This film hasn't aged well. Modern Times should have won the Best Picture of 1936.
