Review of The Great Silence (1968) by Knut D — 12 Feb 2009
Grim and unsettling spaghetti western supposedly set in the snowbound Utah mountains during a mean blizzard in the late 1890's. This movie has one of the darkest endings I have ever seen. Klaus Kinski gives a great performance as the crazed, blond haired killer Tigrero. And Jean-Louis Trintignant is both heartbreaking and menacing as the mute gun-man "Silence".
"The Great Silence" is one of the finest Italian westerns I have ever seen. It's not up there with Leone's best work, but very good never the less.
