A faithful adaptation of one of my favourite books by Pearl S. Buck. It saddens me to read the unkind reviews here as I think people are judging the film by modern standards. The film is beautifully and sensitively shot and the main actors are delightful.
No, they may not be Chinese, but that is the beauty of acting - it is make-believe (and believable it is). The lead actress, the beautiful Luise Rainer, won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in The Good Earth and the film also won an Academy for Best Cinematography.
Truly a movie to have in your collection.
