I need to read the book finally but the movie was well done. I do wish it had been in color bc there was so many neat visuals (costumes, nature scenes, ornate houses, etc...). One thing I didn't care for was the blatant and repetitive misogyny but that was reflective of the time n true to the culture of China.

The white actors playing Asians was somewhat distracting but more reflective of Hollywood at the time then Pearl S. Bucks beliefs. I really liked how the author presented the culture in an easy to understand format without passing judgement (like how they are self deprecating).

This is the kind of film that really transports you to a different time and place and really tells an interesting and unique story. What I love about old films is how they make strong moral statements (killing the ox) that disturb you without being so graphic as compared to nowadays.

I felt so bad for the Chinese ppl during the famine n how the govt treated them instead of helping them killed them-no wonder there was a revolution! This is a moving epic with great characters, acting, history, and plot.
