Review of The Florida Project (2017) by Alex C — 21 Nov 2017
I really expected more from this film, but it was full of terrific acting performances and brought to life existences that aren't often explored.
Unfortunately, the film lacked much in the way of character development and drama; the director relied on too many vignettes about the kids' day-to-day exploits that just got old after a while. It felt like that Daft Punk song "Around the World" with the same line over and over again - enough already!
If it was 30 minutes shorter, it could have conveyed the same message without playing the same note relentlessly. Comparing it to "Boyhood" (perhaps unfairly), which at 2:45 felt like I could have seen more, it just didn't go anywhere for quite a while, which I suppose was part of the point of a listless, Florida summer film, but the director just overplayed his hand.
