Review of Mask (1985) by Dylan O — 28 Nov 2014
This is perhaps the most sentimental film I have ever seen. Yes, yes, I know, it's based on a true story, but that story leaves out all kinds of important, yet mundane realities in favor of the cheesy ones. There is not a single character in the entire movie that is more than two dimensional. Rocky himself, is perhaps the worst. His behaviors and words are all completely predictable after a small introduction.
Yes, this film is heart-wrenching, but I'm afraid that's about all it has going for it. Its attempt to show us how to remain optimistic in the face of huge obstacles is an abject failure, on account of its glossing over the mundane realities and ineradicable complexities involved in a difficult life. Make no mistake: this is a "reader's digest" version of Rocky's story, whatever it is (I don't have any idea what it would be, thanks to this movie).
