Director Martin Scorsese and screenwriter William Monahan deliver a masterfully crafted film which surpasses the expectation of the audience as well as adding plenty of new ideas. Scorsese and Monahan move The Departed from Hong Kong to Boston making it almost a completely new experience. The Departed is also 50 minutes longer than its Mou gaan dou and for a reason, new characters and subplots are added. The cast as a whole deliver some of the best performances of their careers. Damon as Sullivan, DiCaprio as Billy the rookie cop are fantastic but Nicholson as Costello, the villain and Wahlberg as Dignam steal every scene.
With its expertise film making and a brilliant plot The Departed is without a doubt modern classic and one of Scorsese's finest.
