Review of Hereditary (2018) by Thesodomizer — 07 Jul 2018
Hereditary was harrowing. The spectrum of emotions you go through (terror,sorrow,hopelessness,shock...) is incredible. It's hard to watch but even harder to look away.

I have not seen a horror movie made with this level of skill in years. Ari Aster directed and wrote in a passionate yet unsettling way. The first few minutes set the creepy tone without really showing anything. And that says everything. Not only is the film scary to the bone, but it also had lots to say about family trauma and dealing with grief. The way Hereditary was put together was its strongest point, especially the pacing.
The exceptional part is how everything works together. For example the cinematography and the sound design work together to create a unique vision of horror. Add to that Toni Collete's Oscar worthy performance and Hereditary is a masterpiece of its own.
