Review of The Collector (1965) by Meredith W — 13 Dec 2007
The thing about this movie is that BOTH the main characters were superb actors. A lot of the time you get one person who carries the entire weight of the show on his or her shoulders, but this time, the weight was definitely distributed evenly. Terence Stamp and Samantha Eggar both had me completely convinced.
That said, I was seriously disturbed by this movie. I was prepared to be disturbed, but I didn't know the ending was going to be horrible. It was however, well done, basically focusing on the relationship between Terence Stamp and Samantha Eggar, which was brilliantly acted by both of them. I cannot describe how well-acted this was. It is so rare I ever see something this well done.
The camera-work is also very decent for the 60's. There's one shot that I particularly like, which is a crane shot of Terence Stamp on his back with his head on the right side of the frame, then it immediately switches to a mirror image shot of Samantha Eggar. I thought it was sophisticated in its propulsion of character development and foreshadowing.
The only reason this isn't five stars is because of the ending.
