Review of The Birth of a Nation (1915) by Alasdair E — 28 Dec 2014
Two stars rather than one, because I agree with the professional film critic reviews here: Griffith's cinematography, on a technical level, is way ahead of its time. I'm thinking in particular of the John Wilkes Booth scene and the emotion that the lighting effects created.
The content of this film, unfortunately, is way behind its time, and the only reason to really watch this film is so that we (1) are aware of how ugly the racist history is and (2) so that, knowing the history of racism, we can better know how to try to end it.
