The costumes were great. Sure, it was a period piece and that's to be expected, but aren't the visuals the best part of a period piece? Films like this are fun to look at. Day-Lewis is fun to watch, as always, although Ryder and Pheiffer don't click as well, in my opinion.

What amused me most about this movie was how Scorcese seemed to have ADD while directing it. He seemed hell-bent on making a more exciting movie than the material would allow. Quick edits and gimmicky shots gave a certain vitality to the movie that the script and plot didn't.

It's as if he knew that it would be slow if he left it as is, and Scorcese simply cannot find it within himself to make a slow film. A second-tier Scorcese film, which still makes it better than the best efforts of most directors.
