Review of Sweet Bird of Youth (1962) by Alain P — 19 Jul 2007
Strictly on a film adapted from a play, level (and to a lesser extent a Paul Newman level) I prefer this one over Tennessee Williams' "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" because Paul Newman plays his pathetic character very convincingly.
A premature golden boy, who makese a failure of himself. Geraldine Page does a swell job--except she got on my nerves a little. (I wonder how Bancroft did in the role) It's another jaded reflection of Tennessee Williams "broken dreams" subject matter.
In this case, not knowing when to admit defeat. And a very scathing depiction of show business and it's more likely realistic outcome. Despite that the film has its lulls, and is a bit convoluted in terms of conflict, the love interest seems to be a bit languid, but it might be intentional for the play's sake.
It's a strong effort nonetheless.
