Review of Surfwise (2007) by Joan T — 13 Jun 2009
Surfwise would like to be the kind of movie that makes you think, but what it actually is is a celebration of shallowness. There is a herd of people who can't see through to the obvious conclusions of their actions.
Doc Paskowitz may be a legend, but he is also a colossal a$$hole. He is never in peril, although he would like to create the illusion that he is. He is not an intellect although he would like to to believe that he is a shy one.
He is not a conscientious, empathetic, or kind person although he would die to be confronted by these facts. I was struck by the substitution throughout the film of being envied for being happy. This is one of the most miserable films I've ever seen in the surf genre.
