Review of Surfwise (2007) by Bevan S — 15 Dec 2008
This is a step-by-step primer on the plusses and minuses of unschooling. Doc is off on his own tangent, but aren't we all? The kids turn out fine for the most part - I know people with far more stable lives who are far move messed up and far less intelligent.
Doc's mistake is not letting his children guide the rebellion and allowing them free will in their goals. That said, he had a healthy - and I'd say highly justifiable - disdain for the system that most people live in.
If anything, this movie helps me see how radical I actually am in regard to mainstream culture and life and I feel less alone, actually. I hope I'm not as annoying to my children as Doc was, though.
He was of his generation, unfortunately, but we move passed that with each decade.
