Review of Surfwise (2007) by Patrick M — 15 Nov 2008
There are so many stories to follow in this film depicting a surfer who turned away from the material world to pursue surfing and raise an unconventional family. Dorian turned to maxim modern man needs to fight every day to be hungry just as the primitive man had to fight to overcome hunger.
The family of nine traveled in an insanely cramped trailer with very little money as Dorian believed that the struggle against great odds was very invigorating. His kids add another dimension to the story by bringing up how strong willed he was as a father and the opportunities they missed out on from not going to school.
It was nice to see that the family reconciled by returning home. Their father was like a prophet as he took his ideas to such extremes like observing such a strict diet of grains and fresh fruits. Even at such an advanced age while his body is slowing down he still adheres to the same regimen, and will not take any medicines.
He does seem happy, and it looks as if their marriage is a successful one.
