Review of Sunrise (1985) by Matthew A — 04 Oct 2008
Murnau's first Hollywood film (1927)He died in a car crash shortly after making it. This is a disturbing tale of a husband who is plotting to kill his wife so he can take off with his lover. Before he kills his wife he arranges to have a day with her and it is a horrible and beautiful day.
..during which it becomes clear that she (the wife) is falling in love with him all over again...horrible and sad yet beautiful. A strangely touching film juxtaposing the impending violence with such tenderness.
..Murnau was an incredible filmmaker. I love the scene at the carnival..during it I almost forgot what the husband intends to do. I think it influenced the carnival scene in The Conformist ...similar setting, theme and tone.
It's hard to find this movie but I highly recommend it!
