Review of Stagecoach (1939) by Jack W — 31 Jul 2009
I really liked this film. It was just a really good story but it was also done so remarkably well. The cinematography was excellent, from the innovative placement of the camera to the awesome selection of locations to shoot.
Having John Wayne play an anti-hero and not seeing him for the first twenty minutes of the film was not only shocking for this period of filmmaking but refreshing as well. Not enough can be said about the scene where the stagecoach outruns the Apaches.
Just amazing work. The one thing I disliked was the final shootout, just cutting away from Wayne and not showing the shooting. You know he will live, so having the bad guy come stumbling in the bar makes no sense as no one alive actually thinks he will live.
Besides that just a great western and a great film.
