Review of Speak (2004) by Jared M — 03 Sep 2009
This is the rare occasion that I think a movie could have benefitted more by making it longer. I really would have liked to of seen more regarding her art project with her teacher. It kind of came and went with little progression. Her explanation of what she learned from the project was over in a couple of sentences. Not to say that it wasn't bad, just needed a little more depth. Melinda's moods were also a little confusing. I found it hard to believe that she could basically pull a 180 and be fine after getting her secret in the open. Like I said, more timeadded to the film would mean a better way to flesh out little nitpicky things I had about it.
Overall it was enjoyable. I found myself really liking Melinda's parents, even with what little roles they played. Steve Zahn was good, just not in it enough to really make his character terribly relevant.
I also think I should mention the wonderful acting talent of Kristen Stewart. Her "Oh, I'm so EMO!" face was right on the money, along with her "Ugh.....so.....depressed.......want.......die!" face was also very good. Not to mention her "How long have you been seventeen??" face was well placed.
Pretty good film with a strong message to parents to not have daughters or to not let them effing go to parties when they're like 14 years old!
I recommend it to sparkley vampires...and girls.
