Review of Speak (2004) by Stephanie G — 09 Aug 2011
An okay TV movie. The acting is good overall, but I especially liked Michael Angarano and Steve Zahn. The characters are stereotyped, unfortunately, and the story itself is predictable. The ending is a bit set-up, too. Parts were just unrealistic.
I was also under the impression, given the title and the premise, that since Melinda makes the choice to stop talking she would, you know, not talk for most of the movie. She didn't talk a whole lot, but it was more than I expected. I suppose her being "mute" refers more to her not speaking up about her rape rather than not speaking in general. She narrated more than talk out loud. I wasn't crazy about the narration, either. It lacked bite, if that makes sense.
Kristen Stewart was okay. I'll be honest, I think she's better when she isn't talking. When she opens her mouth, she does what she does in her other films: stutters. She also bites her lip and all the works. But she wasn't bad in this, she was just okay. But it's obvious that she's had the same schtick from the start.
Overall, Speak is alright, but not great. I haven't read the book so I can't compare them.
