Review of Spartacus (1960) by Jonathan G — 27 Mar 2010
Spartacus does not seem to fit with the rest of Stanley Kubrick's films. One reason for this could very well be that this was his first widely-known film, and he had not quite developed his own style.
Another might be that he was brought in by Kirk Douglas (who frequently was angered by his techniques) after the script and the crew was brought together. Despite this fact, Kubrick's epic is absolutely amazing.
The story is inspirational, and the script, I'm happy to say, does not rob the film of its intended emotion. On top of that, Douglas turned in one of his finest performances. The effects, fight choreography, acting, story-telling, and even the overall movie, was executed perfectly.
Those searching for entertainment, will not be let down in this stunning Roman epic.
