Review of Spartacus (1960) by Simon T — 05 Jan 2016
Anyone who still holds to the lie that Stanley Kubrick was an unemotional director owes it to themselves to see Spartacus. Not only is it blessed with a truly great screenplay by the blacklisted Dalton Trumbo, finding in the slaves' uprising a cathartic metaphor, but Kubrick - hired at very short notice by producer-star Kirk Douglas - elicits superlative performances from his entire cast and a sublime score by Alex North.
A movie that has improved with age.
