Review of Spartacus (1960) by Larry L — 01 Oct 2011
An admirable epic with a memorable first hour that is ultimately done in its own bloated length, corny performances (I'm looking at you Jean Simmons), cheesy Biblical shmaltz, and a film legacy that is based on a 20-second excerpt from a film more than 3 hours long ("I'm Spartacus").
This is not one I'll be revisiting and seems to have found its place on the AFI Top 100 solely for the purpose of giving the list another epic. It didn't make the list the first time and really should never have been added.
