Review of Silence (2017) by Ryan J — 11 Jan 2017
Scorcese's latest is a bold, beautiful and challenging piece of cinema, excellently performed and thought-provoking at every turn. I'm not religious but this adaptation of a Japanese novel transported me and involved perspectives through which I could access this debate.
Have to confess that I didn't enjoy the ending as it didn't offer as poignant a closure to Garfield's initially layered and moving character. It does sag a bit with the length as well, but a worthy entry into a master's canon.
8/10.
