Review of Red River (2011) by Brian S — 27 May 2011
Kind of a hit-or-miss western for me. on the downside, some of the acting is amazingly hammy (especially the guy who keeps stealing sugar, but everyone's guilty). the setup also comes across as very rushed and weak.
the very first scene feels like there should be at least 2 or 3 before it, and the passage of 14 years and a Civil War happens in a matter of seconds, and for the most part the story and the characters treat it as such.
on the upside, there's a very strong element of tension and conflict throughout the whole film. a movie about a cattle drive doesn't sound instantly engaging, but there's always something happening (even if it does get a bit slow and repetitive at times).
overall average--not outstanding, but passable.
