Review of Potiche (1983) by Ola S — 23 Jul 2011
The French 70s. An umbrella industry manager tormented by strikes, factory occupations, himself being locked up by angry workers and besides, a stupid wife, a rather stupid secretary/mistress, German customers and a son, who wants to marry a girl who actually is his unknown sister. Anyway, the industry manager seems to deserve it.
He has a heart attack and the wife takes over the factory. By the way she almost renews her old affair with the Communist mayor.
Sounds like a funny script, but the stereotypes take over from the actors and not even Catherine Deneuve or GÃ (C)rard Depardieu can stop that. Or maybe they are not interested. This is supposed to be 1977, but it's very much 2011 with some clumsy waves to the nostalgia factor. It's something French filmmakers never been much good at, which is putting the Hollywood comedy agenda into motion pictures. Class struggle as a funny story, but it doesn't function this time.
