Review of If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle (2010) by Ola S — 05 Dec 2010
I think I've said it before. The most interesting film country in Europe today is Rumania and this has been going on for a couple of years now.
Movie history is full of stories about young criminals. And quite many boring times, this has been an excuse for showing boring empty violence. This film by Florin Serban has its violent moments too, but its not about betrayal inside the walls. The betrayal goes on outside by a convict's mother. The conflict it complex.
If you see this, the important thing will not be to say about the character that he has to blame himself, or society or his fellow prisoners. He has good reasons to blame life, regardless of being in jail or not. There's also a kind of love story here, which is destructive, but also something you have to blame on life.
Don't say we decide our fate. It's not always that simple. Not if you ask Florin Serban.
