Review of The Selfish Giant (2013) by Ola S — 11 Apr 2014
Cameron's England. Or Blair's for that matter. Zones with unemployment, drugs and petty thefts to make a living and get some pride at the same time.
This has been told by Leech and Loach before, but Clio Barnard turns the screw even more. First comes food, than morals, but it's still the same problem with friendship, loyalties and forgiveness. Very far from American gangster movies however.
Stealing scrap metal is the road to life and to death, with the usual tremendous British acting. Feel-bad-movie of the year so far from a purgatorio called post-industrial England.
