Review of Phantom of the Opera (1943) by Amy G — 13 Mar 2008
Although part of the Universal Horror cannon it is as much musical as it is horror.
The opera scenes in this film are epic and lavishly produced but the plot that exists around this of the fallen violinist is equally well told.
While the body count is low, as is usual for these old horror films, it still builds up a good idea of tension and Claude Rains pulls off the part of the Phantom well.
Real note should go to the fantastic make up job on the Phantom which is only seen once but is very effective, if not as extreme as the Lon Chaney original.
In all a good film, though not a total horror movie, albeit very much of its time.
