Review of Phantom of the Opera (1943) by Jacob B — 01 Oct 2013
The 1943 #technicolor version of Universal's Phantom of the Opera is a letdown in comparison to the 1925 haunting original. Claude Rains is terrific in this remake but isn't present for much of the movie and doesn't compare to #LonChaney's portrayal of the phantom. The original was much more chilling and should have been the version included in Universal's Classic Monster's box set. The studio felt the need to add a lot comic relief and playful music relieving much of the tension throughout the film. Stick to the original if you want to see Universal's true classic monster...
3/5.
