Review of Phantom of the Opera (1943) by Michael D — 28 Jun 2011
Of all the Phantom adaptations that I've seen, this one is the most boring. Not a whole lot happens in the way of Phantom horror or Erik/Christine romance, but at the same time it's not a bad film.
It's just boring and forgettable. The best part is the Phantom himself, sans the disappointing unmasking scene; his backstory, I thought, was pretty interesting. All the same, though, I'd suggest passing on this version; if you want a classic Phantom film, check out Lon Chaney.
You won't be disappointed.
