Review of Noriko's Dinner Table (2005) by Christophe M — 05 Feb 2010
I am a big fan of a lot of Japanese horror and some of it is just amazing. Of course, there is also a lot of crap out there waiting to waste your precious time. This movie falls somewhere in between. The Japanese love their suicide/cult movies and this is no exception.
This is a long movie and although it kept my interest I frequently found myself wondering what the point was or where it was going. The main character is socially awkward and when she befriends someone online she takes it to the next level and uproots her life to pursue a new life with her new cult.
..excuse me....club. There is a very interesting concept involved though - family rental. Lose a spouse or child? Just rent a new one for a while. It seems like the goal of the film was to make you ponder your life's meaning in some philosophical way but I think it failed in that regard.
I'm not sorry I spent the nearly three hours of my life watching it, but it certainly doesn't compare to some of my favorites.
