Review of Nicholas and Alexandra (1971) by Cory W — 12 Sep 2010
Like Nicholas was one of the last czars of Russia, "Nicholas and Alexandra" is one of the last grand-scale epics to come out of Hollywood. While watching this in my modern history class, I must say that unlike most movies shown in class, I actually really enjoyed this film.
The film obviously could have used a cut or two, but this is a great performance-driven drama. Tom Baker really stood out in the group as the vile faith-healer Rasputin. The film always had a strange shift from liveliness to somber drama, but hey, this was made in the seventies.
This film, by no means, is on the same page as some of the grand-scale hits of the early 20th century, but for those who enjoy history and epics of earlier days, then I'd recommend this. Overall, "Nicholas and Alexandra" satisfies, but doesn't stun.
