Review of Mouchette (1967) by Mark S — 23 Jul 2011
I hate to turn down a movie that ends in suicide, but to say I fully understood and enjoyed this 43 year old French film would be a bit pretentious. One of my major complaints with French films in particular is the need to be overly artsy, and in doing so, lose some of the things that make movies good.
In this case, it's some choppy editing, lacksidaisical characterization, and offbeat story. All together, it's just a bit much to get past to enjoy. It's a classic and that's fine, but that doesn't mean it's good or that I have to like it.
