Review of Mouchette (1967) by Genaro N — 15 Apr 2009
Bleak, austere but deeply liberating. This film is about redemption but in a very bad way, by suicide? yes it is very pessimistic that the only way to reach the divine grace it is when we are dead because in life we really dont see God anywhere. Bresson put us a happy ending in the context of the film. Surely one the most uncompromising and minimalistic film I have seen. But it is also so emotional and deeply enigmatic work of art, we make the character by ourselves, all it is behind the surface, this is the thing that makes this film so special.
Robert Bresson makes this film very magic with a very simple and pure image without great photography or great landscapes or acting, or twisted scripts, only by showing the little things of the human soul and the human suffering. One of the most beautiful films about depression.
