Review of Misery (1990) by Lilo D — 16 Aug 2010
Rarely does one find great Stephen King adaptations-to-film, Misery is one of them. A famous author is taken in by a nurse after he crashes his car when he discovers that she's his biggest fan, and a psycho.
Rob Reiner's uncharacteristically tense and vivid direction, the cinematography, and an outstanding cast are what make this film. The best of all being Kathy Bates, who's unquestionably Oscar-worthy performance conveys Annie Wilkes not as a mental patient who's a monster, but a tragic, misunderstood person who's condition leads her to immorally extreme consequences.
For an unconventional femme-fatale, she's also scary as hell! Although I have not read the book, as a film, this is an outstanding thriller that's marred only by some odd touches of black humor.
I really want to read it now.
