Review of Mesrine: Public Enemy #1 (2008) by Jk F — 30 Aug 2009
Not really a patch on the first half, it has to be said. This part proves why so many great gangster movies follow the rise and fall arc - because it's dramatically interesting! I can't help the comparison, but Che's two parts fit together quite seamlessly even though they were discrete chapters at different times.
With his ascent at the end of the first half complete, this film may have been dramatically accurate, but didn't have anywhere much to go. Vincent Cassel was still mesmerising and technical credits (period detail, fantastic cinematography) were great, but I felt I was watching it ore for completion than anything else.
