Review of Creation (2009) by Jk F — 26 Sep 2009
I suppose this film was okay. Paul Bettany's performance was outstanding, fulfilling all the early promise of Gangster No 1 while Jennifer Connelly was also excellent in the main supporting role (screen time clearly wasn't equal, but there wasn't really any need for it to be).
What this film lacked though was any engaging emotion or heart; qualities that Jon Amiel is clearly capable of as his Sommersby remake was quite an effective tear-jerker. Instead, the movie ended up feeling like the sort of nicely-costumed but slightly empty costume drama with which people (inaccruately) used to associate Merchant-Ivory.
It wasn't a total write-off, but I just like to feel a little more, a good recent reference point being The Young Victoria.
